Local Spotlight: Choppy Oppy Gives Insight Into “Funkier” “Swingstep Vol. 2” Mix

–Written by Kevin Madert
Since we last covered DMV by way of Orlando native Choppy Oppy, he’s been busy. He released a mix, “Swingstep Vol. 1,” full of swing and glitch gems. He secured a spot playing JamCamp Music & Arts Festival, set for June 5-6 in Centerville, VA. And he’s even scheduled a rooftop performance at DC’s Rock & Roll Hotel alongside fellow local DJ Slugworth – the only logical place you should be this Friday, April 17.
In true never slow down Choppy Oppy fashion, none of those things are today’s topic of conversation. Less than a month after “Swingstep Vol. 1,” the eagle-eared producer laid out and put to tape a second installment. “Swingstep Vol. 2” is an upbeat offering stuffed with sonic treats that may well have you dancing the jitterbug with a total stranger before the half-hour runtime is up. Personal highlights include two cuts from last fall’s Meraki Remixed LP and a heavy dose of Adapted Records acts like Beat Fatigue and Cheshire.
We asked Choppy Oppy to share a few words regarding “Swingstep Vol. 2,”:
Swingstep Vol. 2 was a bit funkier and glitchier than Vol. 1. I really wanted to show people how smoothly the electro-swing world bridges with other genres while still keeping an overall swing vibe to the mix. I did this by having multiple tracks that compliment and play off each other playing throughout almost my entire mix – sometimes even three or four at a time. I’ve only been able to do that because there are some really great producers out there making this kind of music. With this mix I strayed away from a lot of the most commonly heard electro-swing artists and tried to highlight some that I had never really heard before, especially Beat Fatigue and Cheshire. I was really trying to see how far away I could get from the typical electro-swing house sound while still keeping the atmosphere of a 1930s-era dance party. Thank you so much for listening; I’m already at work on the next one, as well as some other projects which I hope to be sharing with everyone soon!
