Press Play With Presa, Hear the Nuanced “Spring Cleaning” Mix

When crafting and creating in any medium, a mastery of its intricacies is a near-indispensable advantage. An experienced painter will trace circles around a fresh-faced art school grad. A seasoned tailor is guaranteed more business than his minimum-wage Men’s Warehouse counterpart. And a talented, well-versed DJ – in this case, Los Angeles based house aficionado Presa – can weave a tapestry of sound with ease, leaving overconfident amateurs and emulators in his sonic dust.
Every genre and subgenre has its tics, tricks, and trade secrets, and as technology continues to advance with great speed it becomes easier than ever to appear to understand them – a cursory glance at the Beatport Top 100 can confirm that. Firsthand experience and years of compiled experience are a bit harder to fake, and Presa possesses a healthy amount of both. He’s been immersed in the nonstop world of electronic music for years, and that time has left its indelible mark on the budding performer.
This brings us to my favorite part: the music. On first listen, Presa’s “Spring Cleaning Mix” is a straightforward hour of deep, delicious house. The second time through, usually when minor mistakes make themselves known, I’m instead treated to a tour of the mix’s many subtleties – a direct result of Presa’s vetted knowledge of house music and its many offshoots. While there’s plenty going on, no one moment overwhelms, and nuance reigns supreme as the mix makes its well-paced way from 0:00 to 1:00:00. Thanks to informed track selection and deft hands behind the decks, the listener isn’t walked through a collection of songs so much as taken on a meandering musical adventure, kept moving forward by the rarely wavering four-on-the-floor backbeat. Put simply it’s a hell of a mix, and Presa is clearly poised to do big things – so long as he remembers the little things, too.
