Weekend Warm-Up No. 17: Dreamscape Edition
–Words & list by Mike Hogan
It’s getting close now, BADASS Raves’ Dreamscape Festival is less than a week away, and that means it’s time to start getting hyped up for a weekend of good music, good friends, and pool parties. So while it is the weekend, and that’s certainly something to celebrate on it’s own, I’m choosing to more or less take it easy this weekend in preparation for an absolutely huge weekend looming ahead of me. And considering the fact that this time next week, you all will (hopefully) be getting down at Dreamscape Festival instead of sitting in front of your computer, I figured there was no time like the present to start getting excited. So to get your weekend, and indeed your Dreamscape Festival started off on the right foot, this week’s Weekend Warm-Up features some of the hardest hitting headliners that you can find at Dreamscape.

Dreamscape is fast approaching, and we can’t wait to join Badvss Raves and all of you at Camp Ramblewood May 8-10. In the days leading up to the festival, we’re hoping to get you better acquainted with some of the artists playing the festival; if you read about them here on the AltFreq page, you should definitely catch their performances at Dreamscape.

Another bastion in the realm of free-to-stream music has fallen, as longtime service Grooveshark has shuttered servers for good in the face of hefty litigation – try over $750 million in damages – from major record companies. This marks the end of several long legal battles between the industry and Grooveshark dating back to a 2009 lawsuit; the copyright infringement suit that finally shut them down was set in motion back in 2011.
Up until this week, the service offered millions of unlicensed songs for ad-supported listening, as well as a paid option that removed advertisements. While a large percentage of the songs found on the site were uploaded by users, Grooveshark employees also contributed their own music to flesh out the available music library.

–Written by Michael Hogan
Before I get started, this is a rather bittersweet review, because Empire, the Springfield, Virginia venue formerly known as Jaxx, is shutting down as of May 5th. To get things out of the way, that is a real shame, and the venue will be sorely missed. I have personally been going to shows at the venue for at least a decade now; back when it used to be Jaxx, I saw a few great metals bands like Shadows Fall and the like. It has since been remodeled into Empire and while it has remained the home of the majority of the good metal and post hardcore shows coming through the area, it has recently been putting on a handful of really good EDM shows as well, one of which I was fortunate enough to play back in February. I have a lot of history at Empire/Jaxx, and I know it will be missed by me, and many others that have called this venue home for years.

Colorado product Unlimited Gravity – real name Ronnie Weberg – has never seemed content remaining in one place musically. Beginning with his earliest self-released material (still available on his Bandcamp), the producer/DJ has displayed a keen ear for unique sounds and fresh styles. It’s led to a string of LPs with little sonic overlap and high replay value for Weberg; with his latest, Event Horizon, it’s clear that streak has been extended.
