News: Trip Hop Remix of Brand New’s ‘The Devil and God’

Posted by on Mar 4, 2015 in Featured, News | 0 comments

First off, I want to apologize to you, dear readers, for I have made a grievous oversight earlier this year. On the list of things we care about at this blog, Brand New and trip hop are both very very high up on the list. And while we, apparently, aren’t the only ones to take this stance, Simple Mind, a Boston based producer, decided to take this fascination to the next level, and marry the two into a truly remarkable remix project.

Simple Mind took the moody and experimental classic Brand New album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, and put together a trip hop remix of the entire album. The result is, predictably, fantastic. The Devil and God was such a dark, downtempo masterpiece, that giving it a trip hop spin seems only natural. The groove is perfect, the pace is perfect, and if Devil and God weren’t such a flawless album, I’d almost say it sounds like it was meant to sound like this from the start. Alas, one doesn’t not simply imply The Devil and God can be improved upon. But either way you slice it, it’s damn good.

So far, only “Sowing Season”, “Not the Sun”, “Degausser” and “Limousine” have been released, but the complete album is due out this next week, on March 9th. In the meantime, you can check out the three aforementioned tracks, and sign up for Simple Mind’s mailing list, which will notify you as soon as the complete album drops.

News: Godspeed You! Black Emperor Announces New Album, Song Excerpt

Posted by on Feb 24, 2015 in Featured, News | 0 comments

Written by Michael Hogan

Today is a very exciting day for us here at Alternate Frequency, and indeed fans of post-rock (and good music) everywhere. Earlier today, post-rock royalty Godspeed You! Black Emperor announced the follow-up to their 2012 full-length album Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!.

Their newest album, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress will be released through Constellation Records on March 31st, so thankfully there will be no long waits for this one.

In addition, GY!BE released an 8 minute excerpt from the opening track, “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’”. This selection showcases the signature dissonant, droning, booming sound that has made the band icons of the post-rock scene. If this track is to set the tone for the album, Asunder, Sweet and other Distress will surely be just as colossal as their previous work.

Check out the clip and get a full track listing below. Don’t forget to pick up Asunder, Sweet and other Distress on March 31st – not to mention check back here for a full review. In the meantime, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!

  1. Peasantry or “Light! Inside of Light!”
  2. Lambs’ Breath
  3. Asunder, Sweet
  4. Piss Crowns Are Trebled

Today, a lot of things happened in the world of music. Here are some of them.

1. The music world was in a mini-fervor earlier today upon learning that founding member of Blink-182 Tom Delonge had decided to “leave the band indefinitely” to “work on his non-musical endeavors,” (we can only assume he means Angels & Airwaves). The band’s remaining members (Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker) shortly thereafter announced they’d be moving forward, keeping all the band’s previous commitments by replacing Delonge with Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba. A sad day for fans everywhere, right? As if to say, “not so fast!” Delonge released the following statement through his publicist a few hours later:

Contrary to reports, Tom DeLonge has not left Blink 182. “I never quit the band,” he says. “Actually, I was on the phone discussing a possible Blink-182 event in New York City when I heard the ‘news.’ The ONLY truth here is that I have commitments that limit my availability this year. I love Blink-182 and I’m not leaving.”

While this could in theory be good news for Blink fans, there’s a definite air of “what the hell is going on” here. We’ll try to keep you updated as these odd events unfold. Via Rolling Stone and Alternative Press.

News: Grateful Dead “Core Four” Announce 50th Anniversary Celebration Details

Posted by on Jan 16, 2015 in Latest, News, Reads | 0 comments

Written by Kevin Madert

Fifty years ago, a group of teenagers from California started a band called The Warlocks. After playing only a smattering of shows (including their very first one at a pizza parlor) they changed their name to the Grateful Dead, and…well, you know the rest. Now, after months of swirling rumors, the details of the group’s half-century anniversary celebration have finally solidified. The “Core Four” (guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir, bassist/vocalist Phil Lesh, and percussionists Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart) will play together one last time for three nights over July 4th weekend at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Appropriately enough, this is the last venue the original lineup played before the death of longtime vocalist/guitarist Jerry Garcia.
