When crafting and creating in any medium, a mastery of its intricacies is a near-indispensable advantage. An experienced painter will trace circles around a fresh-faced art school grad. A seasoned tailor is guaranteed more business than his minimum-wage Men’s Warehouse counterpart. And a talented, well-versed DJ – in this case, Los Angeles based house aficionado Presa – can weave a tapestry of sound with ease, leaving overconfident amateurs and emulators in his sonic dust.

News: Trip Hop Remix of Brand New’s ‘The Devil and God’

Posted by on Mar 4, 2015 in Featured, News | 0 comments

First off, I want to apologize to you, dear readers, for I have made a grievous oversight earlier this year. On the list of things we care about at this blog, Brand New and trip hop are both very very high up on the list. And while we, apparently, aren’t the only ones to take this stance, Simple Mind, a Boston based producer, decided to take this fascination to the next level, and marry the two into a truly remarkable remix project.

Simple Mind took the moody and experimental classic Brand New album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, and put together a trip hop remix of the entire album. The result is, predictably, fantastic. The Devil and God was such a dark, downtempo masterpiece, that giving it a trip hop spin seems only natural. The groove is perfect, the pace is perfect, and if Devil and God weren’t such a flawless album, I’d almost say it sounds like it was meant to sound like this from the start. Alas, one doesn’t not simply imply The Devil and God can be improved upon. But either way you slice it, it’s damn good.

So far, only “Sowing Season”, “Not the Sun”, “Degausser” and “Limousine” have been released, but the complete album is due out this next week, on March 9th. In the meantime, you can check out the three aforementioned tracks, and sign up for Simple Mind’s mailing list, which will notify you as soon as the complete album drops.

Shortly after the release of Broken Soul Jamboree in 2008, downtempo virtuoso and glitch pioneer Dave Tipper began experiencing various health issues. The issues continued for nearly five years, limiting his production and touring output to a few EPs and a handful of dates during that time. In the summer of 2013, his health grew dire enough to necessitate open heart surgery, news that had many concerned for the future of both Dave and his music.

News: Godspeed You! Black Emperor Announces New Album, Song Excerpt

Posted by on Feb 24, 2015 in Featured, News | 0 comments

Written by Michael Hogan

Today is a very exciting day for us here at Alternate Frequency, and indeed fans of post-rock (and good music) everywhere. Earlier today, post-rock royalty Godspeed You! Black Emperor announced the follow-up to their 2012 full-length album Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!.

Their newest album, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress will be released through Constellation Records on March 31st, so thankfully there will be no long waits for this one.

In addition, GY!BE released an 8 minute excerpt from the opening track, “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’”. This selection showcases the signature dissonant, droning, booming sound that has made the band icons of the post-rock scene. If this track is to set the tone for the album, Asunder, Sweet and other Distress will surely be just as colossal as their previous work.

Check out the clip and get a full track listing below. Don’t forget to pick up Asunder, Sweet and other Distress on March 31st – not to mention check back here for a full review. In the meantime, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!

  1. Peasantry or “Light! Inside of Light!”
  2. Lambs’ Breath
  3. Asunder, Sweet
  4. Piss Crowns Are Trebled
